MosaicThese days, swimming pools come in so many different shapes and sizes than the classic rectangular, blue-lined design. Thanks to technological advances and changes in trends, the high-end, desirable nature of pools means that owners are always adding new exciting features and designs to keep up with the Joneses.

What are the features and trends being seen in new swimming pools? What is popular with pool owners in 2013?

Mosaics

They can hardly be described as a ‘new trend’, as mosaics were commonly used by the Romans over 2000 years ago, but they remain a very current fashion when it comes to pool design. Whether on the floor of a beach-style pool entrance or daubed all over a pool area, mosaics provide a low-maintenance surface that looks good, gives good texture to walk on and both welcomes and reflects plenty of shimmering light – adding great value to a home.

More colours

As we’ve already hinted at, instead of light blue tones, swimming pools are now being covered in all the colours of the rainbow. Brightly-coloured swimming pools have always been the preserve of the rich and famous, but nowadays ‘normal’ pool buyers are finding that it’s possible to paint their piscine in tones that complement the exterior or personality of their home. Perhaps try a bright yellow or orange for a ‘fun’ pool, or soft shades of red and darker blues for a more exclusive area.

Endless pools

One of the biggest pool trends of the past 10 years has been the rise of the endless pool. These are smaller than your average but come with a motor that generates a variable stream of water current for a user to swim against. Like an exercise bike or a running machine, but in a pool – making it very popular with those with joint issues. Based indoors, the pools also allow for year-round swimming and are easier to treat with the correct chemicals.

Scuppers

Scuppers used to be utilised on boats, where they offer a slot for excess water to drain away from a deck. In swimming pools, they’re becoming fashionable as a method of enabling water flow, but this time into the water. As well as providing a much-needed water flow, scuppers are also being used for aesthetic reasons, with some pool owners placing gargoyles or other ornate decorations around a pool to make it look great.
