Why You Should Try Synchronised Swimming
But if you’re the active type, then lounging around in the shallow end or swimming the odd length or two will get a bit boring after a while. So, why not take up a new hobby and give synchronised swimming a go? You could even practice at home!
Read on to find out some of the benefits of synchronised swimming and why we think you should give it a go:
Firstly, What Exactly is Synchronised Swimming?
Synchronised swimming is a mix of dance, swimming and water-based acrobatics performed in groups. But this hobby is so much more than just putting on a show. ‘Synchro’ as it is affectionately known, requires its participants to have grace and flow in the water, as well as advanced breath control and core strength. There’s more to this sport than sparkly bathing costumes and floral swimming caps.
Keep Fit
Improved Flexibility - Like regular swimming, synchro is a great way of keeping physically fit. And past studies have shown that synchro swimmers come second to only gymnasts when it comes to flexibility. Completing the moves required by these routines could extend your flexibility and make you much more limber.
Increased Aerobic and Lung Capacity - Synchro will also help you increase your aerobic capacity so that you have the breathing control of a long distance runner. Constantly changing between above and underwater exercise requires great control and you may be required to hold your breath for long periods of time.
However, you’ll soon find that most swimmers can hold their breath for up to 3 minutes at a time. Although you’ll never be expected to do this, it’s a clear indicator that synchro increases lung capacity.
Increased Stamina and Endurance – Along with holding your breathe for long periods of time, as you become more practised you will build stamina and endurance. If competing against other teams, swimmers aren’t allowed to touch the floor at any time meaning you’ll be constantly treading water. Even when lifting other team mates – now that’s some core strength!
Helps Brain Function
A key component of synchro is memorising the routines. This can help keep your brain active and healthy in the long-run.
Synchronised swimming is also very good for emotional and psychological health. When you exercise endorphins are released from your brain, these can fight depression and improve your mood, meaning you’ll feel better mentally, as well as physically, when you get out of the water.
Make Friends
Joining a synchronised swimming team is a great way of meeting like-minded people and building friendships. You’ll be spending a lot of time with these people mastering the routines and you may even begin to socialise outside of the pool too.
This sport can increase your confidence, improve your team building skills and build camaraderie. Your self-esteem may even get a boost too!
It’s Fun!
Last but not least, it’s fun! So why not give it a go? You may find that you enjoy it.
